Not Withholding Information

You know those writers who withhold information from the reader for no good reason? And how you thought you weren't one of them? You were wrong.

This has been on my mind a lot lately, since in the war part of War and Peace Tolstoy just left me hanging for several thousand pages waiting to find out if Nospoilertov survived the big battle.

Finally he casually mentions that Nospoilertov wasn't in the battle at all.
